I gotta tell you boils and ghouls, I think that someone is playing tricks on my mind these days. When a book like Johnny Red: Red Devil Rising comes my way, it is hard not to just give up these horror comics and cover war comics all the time. Then again I don’t want to change my name to Daring Dan, but it may have to happen. In this amazing collection of aerial stories, we are presented with the amazing artwork of Joe Colquhoun. Joe is the artist behind Charley’s War, and let me tell you, he is quickly becoming one of my all time favorite artists. His pages have so much detail and consistency to them. This is a realistic art style that would be perfect for some classic horror tales. The characters are near flawless on every single panel. I could really just stare at these pages or hours and hours. When it comes to the stories, I always thought I was more of a ground war kinda guy, but then I read this. The dialogue is something to behold because it is fantastic. I think what is to be enjoyed most, is that these stories are told in segments that are typically under 5 pages long. So being able to present something that was originally seen in smaller pieces and being able to hook a reader was a big task. These stories showcase a time and place that can often be overlooked. As an American, I typically only see the American side of the Wars depicted, so to see a side of a British soldier teaming up with the Russians is great. There is no way, that if I told 5 people to read this book, that 4 would walk away needing more, and the final one would just be wanting it. These pages are GORE-Geous in both art and story, and it is a pleasure to be able to take a look at them and share my thoughts with you.
